I made this cartoon for Beebo last winter while she was still at her old job.  Her department was moving to a shiny new building where the peons were all going to get worse offices, while los big-shots got better ones.  Normally, I am weary of Star Wars references, but sometimes you just have to go there!

Squirrels Go Mad For Coconuts

A pair of squirrels have taken their love of coconuts to a different level - by getting stuck into their favourite snacks.

The squirrels take a nibble out of their weekly coconut snacks.

They love them so much that they dive right inside the shells to get the last tasty bit.

The squirrels are regular visitors to Jane Roberts' garden in Fareham, Hampshire.

They often used to steal the food put out for the birds but now they are just crazy about coconuts.

Jane, 46, puts out two nuts a week and suspends them on pieces of string from the washing line.

She said: "I make a large hole in the coconut so that they can get into the flesh. The first time I saw them feeding I nearly died laughing, they looked just like a pair of spacemen.

"Even now I can't stop chuckling every time I see them."

Louie and Michael, the repetitive racers

On this season of The Amazing Race, there are very few contestants that I actually like. Other than 'The Cowboys', my feelings range from indifference to active dislike--which is fine, because I don't care as much about who wins. Two contestants who have been working their way over from neutrality to hostility for me are Michael and Louie, the police detectives from Providence, R.I. In addition to their less-jovial-than-advertised personalities, I have found Michael's limited repertoire of catchphrases extremely grating. Here's a summary:

Louie, as you can see, is not the big talker of the duo. You could play a drinking game based upon waiting for one of Michael's little phrases--as Beebo pointed out, it's like waiting for the expressions 'fairy tale', 'princess' and 'falling in love' on The Bachelor.

"Etienne"

Beebo and I have been cooking at home more and more, because it doesn't seem that hard anymore, and most of time, it's more fun and cheaper than going out. Our division of labor usually goes this way: Foulard cooks meat and does the dishes; Beebo grocery-shops and does most of the other cooking.


Lately, my favorite instrument for cooking meat has been a non-stick two-burner griddle. It's very handy because it has a large surface area--you can cook meat on one side and potatoes or vegetables on the other side. You can also toast hamburger buns on it, make scrambled eggs, pancakes, or grilled cheese sandwiches. I enjoy the efficiency of cooking everything on one area--it makes me feel like a short order cook (somehow, I find this appealing).

We bought the griddle around the same time we bought an extra-larger frying pan. For some reason, we gave them names in an effort to differentiate them from each other--the griddle became 'Etienne' and the frying pan became...I forget what we called it--the name didn't stick (no pun intended).

For such a cheap item, it's been extremely useful.

Here's to you, Etienne! Or should I say, à votre santé!

The Great Taste of Convenience

Our local grocery store has (for the moment) an international foods section. The most interesting part (to me) is the British foods. I'm fascinated by things like HP Sauce, digestive biscuits, salad cream, and Spotted Dick. Last week, Beebo picked up some Bisto Favourite Gravy Granules, a truly weird product that made me a bit apprehensive at first.

The package we got (a sort of cardboard can) says "Aah! Wednesday", which is apparently part of some Bisto re-branding to "inspire more families to eat together on weekdays, not just Sundays", apparently by consuming a lot of sodium. Bisto has been around in England in various forms since 1908, and the granules were introduced in 1979.

The gravy 'granules' were pretty unappetizing looking in their dehydrated state, but Sunday I got suddenly hungry and was scanning the kitchen for something to eat. Beebo had also gotten a bag of frozen french fries, so I was able to have a snack I like, fries with gravy, which is a sort of casual version of poutine. You make Bisto 'gravy' by mixing a cup of hot water with four teaspoons of granules, and surprisingly, it made a pretty decent-looking gravy. I was quite pleased with my snack!

Fast Food (regional edition)

Beebo's post about McDonald's ('s?) new breakfast sandwich started me thinking--what kind of fast food do I still like? In general, I've been over it for many, many years, but a few items still get my mouth watering: Arby's roast beef sandwiches, Ivar's fish and chips, the Dick's Deluxe with fresh-cut fries, and this little item:The mighty (tasty) Chick-fil-a sandwich! I can never really get my hands on one of these, since I live in Seattle, and their restaurants are pretty sparse in this part of the country. However, I'm going deep into the heart of CFA country in March, so I plan on having a few of these babies while I have the chance (and when I'm not eating barbecue).

The Evil Eye

I just got (from Ebay) a great American movie poster for this Italian film directed by Mario Bava. Beebo doesn't remember the movie (though she liked it), so I'm posting the trailer above. It has a nice b-movie cast: Leticia Romain, John Saxon, and Valentina Cortese. Here's a version of the poster that is hanging proudly in our living room (at least through Halloween):

The original Italian version is translated as The Girl Who Knew Too Much. Oddly, the trailer for the American version includes plot elements not found in the original.

Beebo and Foulard

Here's a photo of Beebo and Foulard at the Obama-Clinton rally in Unity, N.H. in July 2008. Beebo is the one in the green print dress with the umbrella. Foulard is next to her wearing a brown t-shirt (it had a picture of Obama and says 'UNITY' on the other side--a lucky coincidence).

TV Classics

Don't tell Beebo, but this is what she's getting for Xmas--all 2,347 episodes of this classic series, plus a talking Hawkeye action figure that says a variety of world-weary phrases.
